Trait based models of behavior assume that the drivers of behavior are deeply embedded in the wiring. Type assumes that the type pattern is innate. Both propose that the factors or processes involved are moderated through life experience. There is a good deal of research that shows that on the surface the relationship between the core factors are related, leaving you with the impression that they are assessing different sides of the same horse. The Big 5 proponents are quick to argue that their model is superior because it includes a measure of emotional reactivity. Users of personality type know that there are different levels of maturity and effectiveness, and that these are hard to measure. What is true of both frames is that the factors, blended together, produce powerful patterns that teams can learn from and use to accelerate their effectiveness. Learn the nature of these models and how teams can use the insights to move forward.
